    C- Reading
5- Read the following passage, then answer the questions:

Every second, 1 hectare of the worlds rainforest is destroyed. That's equivalent to two football fields. An area the size of New York City is lost every day. In a year, that adds up to 31 million hectares more than the land area of Poland. This alarming rate of destruction has serious consequences for the environment; scientists estimate, for example, that 137 species of plant, insect or animal become extinct every day due to logging. In British Columbia, where, since 1990, thirteen rainforest valleys have been clear-cut, 142 species of salmon have already become extinct, and the habitats of grizzly bears, wolves and many other creatures are threatened. Logging, however, provides jobs, profits, taxes for the government and cheap products of all kinds for consumers, so the government is reluctant to restrict or control it.
Much of Canada's forestry production goes towards making pulp and paper. If these paper products could be produced in some other way, Canadian forests could be preserved.
    A-Answer the following questions:
    1. What are the consequences of logging on environment?
    2. Are there any advantages for logging? What are they?
    3. Does the end of the passage suggest a solution? What is it?

1-Hundreds of species of plant, insect or animal become extinct every day due to logging.
2-Yes, as it provides jobs, profits, taxes for the government and cheap products for all kinds of consumers.
3-Yes, it does. If we find other ways to produce things like paper, many of the forests can be preserved.

    8. a. Write a paragraph of about 100 words on:
    "Charitable Organizations"

No one can deny that charitable organizations play a very important role in all countries of the world. It is known that there are a lot of people who live in abject poverty. Those people are in bad need of those who lend them a hand to lead a decent life. Charitable organizations do an excellent job when they collect money from rich people and give it to those who are in dire need of it. They sometimes ask humanitarian teachers to give the poor students private lessons for free. They may provide them with clothes and food. There are also medical charitable organizations which help a large number of poor patients. Some of the best doctors treat the needy free of charge. It is our duty to help charitable organizations by all possible means as they contribute greatly to relieving the pains of poor people and draw a smile on their lips. In this way, they open the door of hope before them and make them feel that they are not alone in this world.

    b. Write a paragraph of about 100 words on:
"Money is the root of every evil".
Is money the root every evil? The answer to this question is not so simple as it sounds for it needs elaboration. Money is a tool that can be used well or badly. Therefore, I'd prefer to say that it is the love of money which is the root of all evil and not money itself. To become rich in a short time, some corrupted people may commit crimes! Not a single day passes without hearing about a bank robbery or a murder. The reason why such crimes are committed is usually the desire to make a fortune in no time without exerting great efforts. Although having a lot of money is a blessing from God, it can be a curse if we misuse it. For example, a lot of deviated wealthy people spend their money in a way that displeases God. Some of them waste their money on drinking wine, gambling or taking drugs. In this way they ruin themselves and their families. Others are wasteful of their money. Wastefulness is a bad quality of course. On the other hand, money is indispensable. If someone said," Money is not important ", we would consider him foolish. We need it to spend on our education, food, shelter and so on. When we use it well, it becomes a servant to us. Wise people use it for the good of the society in which they live so as to gain the satisfaction of Allah.

How are you? I hope you are well. In fact, I'm writing you this letter to ask you to pay a visit to Gaza Strip to see the traces of the Israeli aggression on it. The Palestinians' life has become a hell because of the daily atrocities they are subjected to. The Israeli soldiers treat them in a savage way. They deprive them of their basic rights. Moreover, they destroy their houses. A lot of people have become homeless. Many families have lost their breadwinner. A lot of children have become orphans. Wives have become widows. The international community must do something to put an end to the massacres committed by the Israelis. If you go to Gaza Strip, you will see all these things which no human being approves of.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
    Yours,
    Ahmed Ali

    2. Write an e-mail to your friend Omar Salem saying why cleanliness is a must today. Your name is Hassan Gamal.
    Dear Omar Salem,
How are you? I hope you are well. In fact, I'm writing you this e-mail to say why cleanliness is a must today. Every year we hear of new diseases and epidemics which spread like fire all over the world. I think the main cause of such epidemics is that most people don't follow the rules of hygiene and sanitation. You find people who throw rubbish in the streets instead of throwing it in the litter baskets which are found everywhere. This attracts flies and germs. Some people don't care about the cleanliness of public gardens, schools, hospitals and the governmental offices. These places are usually dirty from both inside and outside. This, of course, contributes greatly to the spread of diseases. In addition to that, street vendors who sell unwrapped sweets to people are to blame. We all know that leaving any kind of food uncovered attracts germs. This, of course, is a main cause of diseases. I think you agree with me when I say that all human beings should pay attention to personal cleanliness and public cleanliness so that we can put an end to the spread of infectious diseases.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.
    Yours,
    Hassan
